Choosing a Planetary Gearbox for High-Speed Pick & Place

Category:Exhibition News views 459

In high-speed pick-and-place applications for 3C and lithium battery manufacturing, gearbox selection directly determines cycle time and positioning accuracy.

1. Backlash and repeatability

Keep single-stage backlash below 5 arcmin. With an absolute encoder, mechanical tolerances can be relaxed further.

2. Inertia matching

Keep the load-to-rotor inertia ratio below 10:1, and below 5:1 for high-speed axes, otherwise tuning becomes difficult and overshoot appears.

3. Radial and axial loads

When pulleys or pinions are mounted directly on the output shaft, check the overhung load and specify a reinforced bearing option if needed.

4. Thermal balance

For continuous high-frequency starts and stops, calculate heat generation by duty cycle to avoid grease degradation.
